NAF recruitment is considered federal recruitment. However, it differs from federal civil service recruitment because the money used to pay NAF employees comes from a different source. Civil service jobs are paid for by money appropriated by Congress. On the other hand, NAF money is generated by Air Force Clubs, bowling alleys, golf courses and other activities that employ NAF employees.

We have two types of NAF positions: "Flexible" and "Normal". Flexible employees have a work schedule that depends on the needs of the activity. These employees may work from a minimum of zero to a maximum of 40 hours per week and receive no benefits. Regular employees work between 20 and 40 hours per week. Military spouses may be eligible to apply for employment preference for NAF DoD positions in connection with the transfer of their military sponsor to a new duty station. Spousal priority eligibility begins 30 days prior to the date the military sponsor reports to the new duty station.
